Brocka, Bernal, & The QCinema 2019 Opening

The 7th edition of the QCinema film festival kicked off with a strong start last Sunday, October 13. Opening the 10-day cinematic feast was Sigrid Andrea Bernardo’s riveting film “Untrue.” Last year, it was Japan’s enamoring movie ‘Shoplifter’ that formally jumpstarted the festivities, but Bernardo’s rendition of a thriller was an equally compelling film in its own space.

Led by movie veterans Cristine Reyes and Xian Lim, Untrue explores the variety of realities we convince ourselves and other people in the pursuit of silencing our closet’s clattery skeletons. The film’s use of sound was clever and the unraveling of storylines was comprehensive. It also helped that actors Reyes and Lim are conclusive thespians who are visibly hell-bent on conveying a story.

Right before guests were treated to Bernardo’s spectacle of a narrative, FDCP chair Liza Dino and Benilde’s Center for Campus Art Director Gerry Torres welcomed the press to the re-curation of the Brocka, Bernal, & the City Exhibit at the Gateway Gallery of Gateway mall. Originally held at Benilde’s School of Design and Arts Gallery earlier this year, the fair aims to fortify and celebrate the filmmakers’ contribution to the Philippine cinema.

Furthermore, it’s incredible how QCinema Director Ed Lejano and Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte have been head-on with improving, if not perfecting, the QCinema brand. Considering how the film festival produced only three movies in their first year, to say that the annual affair has grown would be an understatement.

Determined to live up to their slogan, “One city. To the world” the movie festival differentiates itself from its contemporaries by delivering not only local films but also a slew of award-winning international entries. With over 70 movies, this year’s QCinema has 10 categories viewers can feast their eyes on.
