I’ve stayed in a quite few hostels in Manila, and I must say that the vibe is undeniably dynamic. Apart from their affordability, here are some of the reasons why we’re choosing hostels over other accommodations: first, the hostel and its people make you feel psychedelic bursts of culture, letting you travel the world within the confines of your temporary home through shared stories; second, there’s no such thing as strangers. Yes, you read that right. Only friends you haven’t met yet. Most, if not all guests in hostels unleash such a welcoming approach when they stumble upon other guests—making hostels less intimidating. They meet in the hostel’s common area to exchange stories over food, gather in night outs, jam on roof decks, and any other ‘barkada trips’ like they’ve known each other for years; third, guests in hostels, being the backpackers they are, explore our country more than most of us locals do!; and lastly, creative juices just keep flowing in hostels where visions of vibrant colors, hammocks, and well utilized spaces are evidently seen.
Now, you may be wondering where these may be found in the country. There are tons of them, but here we lead you to the artsy ones:

Flotsam and Jetsam Hostel
If this may sound and look familiar, it may be because you have come across this Instagramagical universe over Instagram several times.
Why ‘Flotsam and Jetsam’ Hostel? Co-owner Mia Sebastian says, “It’s actually a maritime term that refers to the debris in the ocean that you can salvage after the ship goes down. It’s like the travellers are floating on the tide of circumstances, getting washed up on the shore or somewhere.” As in the recent eponymous movie, the characters have their own stories floating, waiting to be heard and understood.
