Heydays of the Homegrown Brands

The year gave us a generous serving of exposure and recognition that will lead to a more promising future for Filipino craftsmanship.

It’s been lovely to witness our own artistry slowly redeem its old-world charm in the local market scene. As consumers plea for more of something useful, desirable, and feasible all in one in the local market scene, more Filipino makers have come up with revolutionary products that meet or even exceed a mindful or meticulous consumer’s expectations.

Really, the right time to go loco for local is now, and since we are to experience yet another cheery session of sun soiree, let us introduce you to some of our favorite homegrown brands that give us easy access to all purpose-driven and thoughtfully-made summer essentials.

Funk Trunk Bamboo Cutlery Sets PHP 499; Funk Trunk Bamboo Sunglasses (not posted on the website); Classic Bamboo Watch PHP 3,499

Established in November 2014, Funk Trunk is a Filipino company that prides themselves for innovating recycled and sustainable materials and turning them into stylish wearables. All of their products are mostly made from bamboo—from wristwatches to tumblers and towels to sunglasses—everything is fit for the eco-conscious elegante.

The most exciting part is that they actually plant a tree for every purchase. The goal is to reforest the Philippines and plant one million trees by 2020. Funk Trunk has planted over 10,000 trees with its partners since 2014. Funk Trunk is available online through funktrunk.ph.

There are days when people wear sunscreen for the sole purpose of protecting their own skin from the harmful rays of the sun, and that has done a lot more damage to the environment than we are aware of. Thankfully, a local company decided to formulate a sunscreen that embodies the key benefits of physical sunscreen. MAGWAI’s reef-safe sunscreen is water- and sweat-resistant, cruelty-free, budget-friendly, and made mindfully to protect both your skin and the coral reefs. This homegrown brand made it possible for humans and sea creatures, especially the coral reefs, to share the ocean and be protected both at the same time. MAGWAI is available through magwai.com.ph.

SKINNI Swimwear

A game changer in the local swimwear market scene, SKINNI’s goal is to provide quality swimwear that suits all types of shapes and sizes.

We especially love their Starter line, which features one simple style for all women regardless of age, size, or style.  We love how the bottom is seamlessly cut to support the tummy area and the top, which is made from special high-quality fabric that grips the skin when wet. Each piece is designed to empower whoever wears it and definitely lets you get active on the beach all you want!

SKKINI Swimwear is available through skinniswim.com

LAWUD Lifestyle

This local clothing brand features comfy floral button-up shirts for daily casual wear. They are known for their loud, vibrant, floral prints in androgynous cut—totally the perfect wear for the easy breezy life on the beach. Shop via their Instagram page @lawudlife.

These are only a few of the offerings in the local market scene, not even a fraction of what to discover out there. So next time you go to the mall, why not look for more of what our fellow Filipino has got to offer—brands that will truly mark a claim to the good old buzz phrase “Proudly Pinoy.”
